เว็บไซต์ : Post TodayAccording to the Ministry of Healthcare, Thailand's spa industry boasts an almost $1 billion annual market and ranges from cheaper local shops to 5-star high-end spas in luxury hotels. SPA targets both the 5 and 4-star markets, industries that have always been very competitive. SPA's main strategy is to strengthen its brand by offering the best possible customer experience. The CEO claims that more than 80% of total visits are foreigners and more than half have pre-booked (and pre-paid) from the company website. Value-to-money is SPA's key strength - you can find the same quality of service but 50% more expensive from other top-tier spas. A SPA (Rarinjinda) treatment program starts as low as $60 per hour to more than $200, offering the same, perhaps even better quality that you find from world-class spa chains. Realizing that therapists are one of the key success/fail factors, SPA set up its own in-house training school for both new and experienced therapists. These courses not only train in therapist knowledge, but also in how to service customers at the company's standards.
What's next for them? While high-end markets are still the main focus for branch expansion, the CEO wants to expand its focus to the mass market in order to capitalize on local demand. Also, targeting locals would help balance business risk as tourist-heavy businesses tend to see more volatility in customer traffic. These plans to expand into the 3-star spa arena (higher turnover but smaller ticket size) should be finalized by 3Q this year.
My take: Though SPA's total market share was only 1% with roughly Bt300m in revenue last year, its margin was impressive at roughly 20% of net profit. After the IPO, company has Bt400m set aside for expansion CAPEX. To be honest, I was impressed with the types of specialized treatments on offer such as massage in a Himalayan salt room or spa with sound therapy. Some of treatments were created by the CEO himself from his personal experience and studies and I got a strong sense that he is passionate about his business. However, going into the 3-star mass market could require a different set of management. And since SPA has never been in this market before, it could struggle to reach the success of the company's higher-end brands, at least in the beginning. Next for me is to tell my boss that I need a half-day off in order to perform some "on-the-ground" research!
